Team USA takes 3rd
Honza threw down during the Xalps and focused on his main objective - Monaco. While we didn't have time to reach the beach, thanks to Criegel the Eagle, we did manage to stay off a British invasion and a Russian assault in the last hours of the race to take 3rd place! The best finish by an American yet! USA is showing it's stars & strips all over the International PG scene and Honza took us all to the podium standing next to the world's greatest pilots of all time. It was an awesome experience and adventure to be team mate to such a strength and flying talent. Many thanks to all of you who have made our participation in the Xalps possible. With out you all there would be no Team USA. Our deepest thanks. More to come as we re-enter the normal world and have fully recovered.

RED BULL X-ALPS ATHLETES FLY OVER SALZBURG
This morning, July 16, 2009, a squadron of six Red Bull X-Alps athletes flew a test flight directly over the city centre of Salzburg, Austria.
The flight was part of preparations leading up to the world's most spectacular adventure race, the Red Bull X-Alps which begins at 11:30 on July 19 in Salzburg.
The athletes will compete in the 818km event, where competitors must hike and fly through the Alps and negotiate seven turnpoints before reaching the goal in Monaco. Every competitor will have a GPS device which tracks their exact position and displays it on a Live Tracking map on the official event website.
Air traffic at busy Salzburg airport was diverted temporarily to allow the athletes to fly directly over the dramatic Festung Hohensalzburg castle. It's the first time permission has ever been granted from the control tower for such a stunning flight.
Heli Eichholzer (AUT1), Christian Amon (AUT2), Alex Hofer (SUI1), Martin Müller (SUI2), Christian Maurer (SUI3) and Michael Gebert (GER) launched from the Gaisberg mountain, glided across Salzburg's Old Town, circled the Castle overlooking the city and landed in the Henkerswiese just south of the world-famous fortress.

Intermountain League Races!
Found this posting on the pgforum! Don't miss out on these races!
The Intermountain League Meet xc races are going again this summer.
The idea is to keep the Meet races unsanctioned, informal and low cost, adding gps-based scoring so the results are legit. We will try to have a website up soon where pilots can sign up, see who is coming, and follow the scores. Most of all, the idea is to go racing with our buddies and do some great flights.
Schedule:
Jackson Hole: June 19, 20 and 21. This will coincide with the Jackson Hole Aerofest.
Salt Lake: July 9, 10, 11 and12. The site will be Inspo, where the US Nationals will be held the following month.
Sun Valley: Sept. 4, 5, 6 and 7. The Baldy chairlift will be open for Labor Day weekend.
Cost and Other Details:
$12 per pilot per day, which will go toward scoring, retrieve gas and beer. Anything left over will be returned to the pilots as prize money. All pilots will also need to buy a temporary membership to support the local club. An USHPA release will also be required for every pilot. Scoring and web hosting will be provided by Jugdeep Aggarwal, with support from USHPA.

Fall weather
It has been a bit warm here in Ketchum lately, so to settle my demons I occasionally get a hike and fly in for some leg training and a bit of wind in my face. Sun Peak is the best and simplest place to access right now. A short bike ride and about an hour hike puts you right up on top. A PERFECT LZ BELOW IN THE FORM OF A PUTTING GREEN owned by Sun Valley corp, so be sure not to anger that giant when landing. Room for some wanker moves makes losing altitude fun and sure saves my legs from the downhill jam. My only wish is that I would get around to hike n flying there more often. Not too many pilots up here so I am often alone. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Go True Blue!
Here is a letter i received recently because I live in a red state.
Dear Red States:
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't
aware, that includes California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all of the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to
the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of
Liberty. You get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft. You get
WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of
America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama. We get
two-thirds of the tax revenue; you get to make the red states pay
their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than
theChristian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
bunch of single moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be
pro gay-rights, pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all
our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask
your evangelicals.
They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for
no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their
children's caskets coming home.
We do wish you success in Iraq, and hope that the WMDs turn up, but
we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's and McInsane's
Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America's quality wines, 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the
high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living
redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools
plus Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope
with
88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia. We get
Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah
was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we're discussing the war, the death penalty or gun laws, 44
percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam
was involved in
9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy b*stards believe you are the people
with higher morals than we lefties.
Finally, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed
they grow in Mexico.

Spot ON!
I was recently at a retailer show in Utah for Snowmobilers where I was working for ORTOVOX as a tech rep standing at the ready to sell & /or explain how beacons work. There is a lot of bad information being spread around by those guys who aren't staying on top of technology advances and in general are lying about the how and what is real within the avalanche beacon industry. While I was there, back aching from standing and throat hoarse from correcting lies and defamation spread by the competition I had the chance to connect with SPOT. As I am slow to buy gear, because it always costs more then I have, but I have been a huge fan of this technology since it was first released last year. Already I have benefited from my friends who use this tool when their wife called asking me to check on the where abouts of her husband, Honza, who was well on his way to setting the Idaho state open distance record (139.5 miles). It was a simple task of checking the live tracking and relaying the info to her so she could be johnny on the spot when he landed. Which she was, saving him much headache and hassle finding a ride from somewhere east of Kilgore, Idaho. Having been involved in the Red Bull XAlps in 2007 where live tracking gave me soo much information about the who is where and what might be the best route to follow, i can tell you that this spot tool is the best device any pilot choosing to go XC can have. The safety of having the ability to call in the emergency crew if injured upon reconnection with the earth manually or automatically, plus your significant other having the ability to check in on your where abouts from the computer relieving their concern about where you might be is huge! Now when u cut away and go for it, someone can always know where you are and come and find you if you get into trouble. Dare I say that those lost to the wilds would have been found almost immediately w/o extensive and costly searches if they had only been using this device.In a small handheld unit I now have the ability to "phone home" with the push of a button. It reminds me of the old EPIRB I carried during an extended canoe expedition, which was twice the size of a #10 tin can(coffee can) and when the button was pressed in came the royal canadian airforce to save the day. That was more then 20 years ago! Thankfully technology has come a long way since then.
It is safe to say that buying this unit and subscribing to its service will ultimate save your life, in the field or from the wife as she can no longer freak out not knowing where you are.
